When I die, throw my ashes in the water Let my bones return to the sea. But while I'm alive I will live like a child Let the holy water wash over me. When you start as dust the only way to go is up Until one day you are born into light. And every day you just try to find a way Back to that perfect place above. If you give yourself away you will never be safe But you'll find more of yourself in the world. If you keep it all inside you will never ever die: Loneliness and fear living side by side. Keep your laces tied up tight 'Cause when the going gets tough you know it's time To press yourself to The Finish Line

We lost Justin on an ATV And we lost Charlie out hunting And we lost Nick in Afghanistan These things we don't understand. Working hard just to get by So much to do before you die Have kids, have bills have a heart attack Jump right in and never look back-- Out chasing dreams in No Man's Land Out chasing dreams in No Man's Land We thought in college we would have it made But it didn't work out that way While we wrote papers the debt piled up When we got out we were out of luck-- Out chasing dreams in No Man's Land Out chasing dreams in No Man's Land We learned history by studying war From the Revolution to Desert Storm We pledged allegiance to the flag Put our hands on our hearts and thought we were safe... But we lost Justin on an ATV And we lost Charlie out hunting And we lost Nick in Afghanistan These things we don't understand. Working hard just to get by So much to do before you die Have kids have bills have a heart attack So jump right in and never look back.

I was born, I was born in a North Dakota Storm I was born for times like these I was raised, I was raised in the land of the brave I don't back down when I'm afraid. Here I am, here I am just a little Pollyanna In an Armageddon scene There you are, there you are bigger than a star Still a stranger to me. Oh we all get by somehow And a few get away with robbery But we keep the faith somehow Somehow we sing: La la la la... Who decides, who decides what's a fact and what's a lie Oh it's not you or I But the truth, oh the truth is bigger than the moon And it can raise the sinking tide. Oh we all get by somehow And a few get away with robbery But we keep the faith somehow Somehow we sing: La la la la...

We Are One 03:19
I am not from around these parts Where I'm from it's dark after dusk In the wide wild, we are one In the wide wild, we are one. City lights can't shine like those Northern lights A city street can't take your mind off your life Coffee shops and shopping malls are ends of a maze A big old tree just stands there relishing the day In the wide wild, we are one In the wide wild, we are one. Take my hand let's walk down a wooded path Lay down in the dunes where the water laps In the wide wild, we are one In the wide wild, we are one.

I will work for minimum wage and you'll work in a factory After a few years of working like that We'll move out of the city. We will find a decent place in a little town with a slower pace I'll wait tables while you fix cars and we'll afford those small town bars. Soon we'll own a country farm With chickens and a cattle barn We'll raise our children on rural love And soon we'll be moving on-- We'll build a little Cottage By the Sea We'll build a little dream, you and me. A little boat with a big white sail A long sand beach with a foot-print trail A red tile roof to keep us safe and dry Like a martini every night We'll build a little Cottage By the Sea We'll build a little dream, you and me. We'll sell the farm and cash the land It'll be at least 200 grand I know you don't believe me now But we'll make up the rest somehow We'll build a little Cottage By the Sea We'll build a little dream, you and me.
6.
We saved big money and we lost our little town We boarded up the window, let the whole thing down There's a prairie grass graveyard where we park our car It's in the name of progress--how'd we let it get this far American Dreams swallowed the America I love The companies hallowed my heart of any trust And now I sing softly to my babe: I hope you make a home out of this mess that we've made. We wanted more fuel so we spilled more blood He came back in a coffin--why do the best die young? When I turn the engine my heart takes the wheel I paid for the gas but whose life did I steal?
7.
Something old but not forgotten Something new and comforting Something close that reminds you of a thousand miles away Something soft that makes you strong Something you can scream out-loud And watch the world melt into peace. I need Music Tonight to keep my mind on The messages spoken with the soul I need Music Tonight to keep my eyes on The heaven at the end of the road. When the settlers came this way They had to scrimp and save But they dug in and weathered All the struggles they would face But the song stayed alive And helped them survive The American dream was a melody. I need Music Tonight to keep my mind on The messages spoken with the soul I need Music Tonight to keep my eyes on The heaven at the end of the road. And some crazy days You think you'll go insane Just looking at all of those bills you can't pay But though we may lose Our hearts and our shoes We'll dance to the rhythms that carry them away.

about

"American Dream," Andrea's first EP, reflects on coming of age in a post 9/11 America. As a young mother, a singer and global traveler, she connects the dots between her small-town Midwest dreams and the bigger dreams of a hurting world and reimagines what the American Dream could mean for the 21st century.
